Planning a backup connection

A cellular backup keeps a site connected when its main line fails. Decide what must stay online, then size the connection for that.

  • Teltonika RUT200: compact 4G that also suits backup internet for small sites.
  • Teltonika RUT241: for installations where failover options matter, with eSIM as well as a physical SIM.
  • Teltonika RUTM51: industrial 5G for primary or backup connectivity where you need higher speeds.
  • Card terminals, alarms and door entry use little data. Video and large uploads use a lot. Size the plan for what has to keep working while the main line is down.
  • Test the failover before you need it: with the customer's agreement, disconnect the main line and confirm the critical equipment stays online.

Frequently asked questions

How much data does a backup connection need?

Only what the critical equipment uses while the main line is down. Card payments and alarms use little. Video uses a lot, so plan for it if cameras must stay reachable.

Should I test a backup connection?

Yes. Disconnect the main line under supervision and confirm that the critical equipment stays online, so you find any problem before an outage does.
