Gate or intercom will not open
Gate or GSM intercom not opening? Separate the mobile-network path from gate programming: does the call ring, is the caller whitelisted, is the relay set.
Start by separating the two halves of the problem
A GSM gate opener or intercom has two jobs: get the call from your phone to the unit over the mobile network, and turn that call into a gate movement. Most faults sit in one half. Find out which before you change anything.
What you see, and where to look first
| What happens | Most likely half | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| The call never connects, or you hear a network message | Network or SIM | Power, signal, SIM active and not expired, antenna connected |
| It rings, but the gate does nothing | Programming or relay | Is your number authorised, relay on-time, relay wiring |
| It rings once and is rejected or hung up at once | Authorised-caller list | Is your number stored in full international format (+353…)? Is your caller ID withheld? |
| Works from some phones, not others | Authorised-caller list | Missing or mistyped numbers, or a full list (many units store a fixed number of users) |
| Worked for years, then stopped for everyone | SIM, network or power | Expired pay-as-you-go SIM, a network retiring the technology the unit uses (see the switch-off guide), power supply, damaged antenna |
Work through it in this order
- Power. Check the supply and any status lights. A supply that sags when the gate motor runs can reset the GSM unit and drop it off the network. Read the unit's manual for what its lights mean.
- Signal. Compare signal at the unit with signal outside the cabinet on a phone. Metal enclosures, long antenna cables and antenna placement are common causes. See weak or no network.
- SIM. Confirm the SIM is active and, if it is pay-as-you-go, that it has not expired or run out of credit. If the unit cannot enter a SIM PIN, make sure the SIM does not ask for one.
- The call. Ring the unit from an authorised phone and note exactly what happens: rings and answers, rings and rejects, busy, or no ring at all. Each outcome points to a different fault, as in the table.
- Authorised numbers. Check your number is stored exactly as the manual requires, usually in full international format such as +353… with no spaces, and that your phone is not withholding its number. Many units decide who may open the gate by the caller's number, so a withheld number is rejected.
- Relay and gate. If the call is answered and accepted but nothing moves, check the relay's on-time setting, the wiring to the gate controller's input, and whether the gate opens when you trigger that input by hand.
- The network itself. If all of the above pass, check whether the unit only supports 3G or a single network that has changed. See the 2G and 3G switch-off guide.
Change one thing at a time
Note what happens after each change. Avoid unverified programming codes, resets or account changes. Some units are configured by SMS commands: use only the commands in the manufacturer's manual for your exact model.
What to have ready if you contact us
- The ICCID printed on the SIM, and the model of the unit
- When it last worked, and whether anything changed around then (power work, SIM swap, storm)
- What happens when you ring: rings and answers, rings and rejects, busy, or no ring
- The site location, so we can compare with network coverage
Frequently asked questions
Why does my gate opener ring but not open?
If the call connects but the gate does not move, the mobile network is usually doing its job. Look at the authorised-caller list, the relay on-time and the wiring to the gate controller.
Why does the gate open for some people and not others?
Most dial-to-open units only accept calls from stored numbers. A number that is missing from the list, stored in the wrong format, or a caller who withholds their number will be rejected.
Do I need to top up the SIM?
Not with an annually billed SimFalcon SIM. A pay-as-you-go SIM from elsewhere can expire or run out of credit and silently stop the gate working, a common cause of a gate that worked for years and then stopped.
Can weak signal stop a gate opener working?
Yes. A unit inside a metal cabinet or with a poorly placed antenna may register but miss calls. Compare signal at the unit with signal outside the enclosure before changing anything else.
